The IAP Secretariat marks the passing of its former General Counsel

The Secretariat of the International Association of Prosecutors is deeply saddened to inform all IAP members that our former General Counsel, Gary Balch, passed away on Wednesday 12 July 2023.

 
Gary was a very talented, professional and well-respected lawyer, with a keen interest in international cooperation and collaboration that spanned his career.  As a member of the Crown Prosecution Service of England and Wales, he developed an expertise in domestic and international asset recovery, working within the CPS Proceeds of Crime unit and also as the UK liaison prosecutor to the United States.  Gary joined the IAP in April 2019 and served as our General Counsel until September 2022.  During that time, Gary played a significant role in the initial development of PICP (Prosecutors International Cooperation Platform) and led the IAP’s development of its professional programme through the Global Training Academy, the Specialist Networks and the regional and annual conferences.  Those who worked with Gary will recall his great sense of humour, infectious laugh, positive outlook, kindness and dedication to his work.  Gary was a highly valued and well-liked colleague and friend, and he will be greatly missed by the IAP Secretariat and our wider membership.
